The  documentary  depicts  the  role  of  women  during  extreme  historical   events.   More   specifically,   the   film   refers   to   the   participation and contribution of women to the Greek Resistance during  the  German  Occupation  as  well  as  to  the  tortures  they  suffered. The film is based on the oral testimonies of those women that survived.

“Birds in the Mire” is the first part of a trilogy followed by “Among the Rocks” and “The Girls of the Rain” that highlights the feistiness and strength of the female soul via personal accounts and evidence.

A poetic experimental film. A journey which leads to the discovery and  final  acceptance  of  the  personal  vision  through  an  alternate  scenery, where good and evil constantly change forms as the final destination  becomes  clearer  and  clearer:  The  deeper  repressed  memory.

Antouanetta  Angelidi’s  experimental  and  highly  allegorical  film  is  divided  into  three  independently  existing  segments:  The  Net,  The  Dice  and  Free  Will,  each  one  representing  a  philosophical  idea.  These segments intertwine because of the involvement of the Thief who is the connecting link between the three reality perspectives.

According to Antouanetta Angelidi the film explores: The different levels of reality that can be experienced, the realization that we are all mortals. And finally, the film is an ongoing conversation with European culture.

The Cabinet of Dr. CaligariΓερμανία/Germany, 1920, μ/α/b&w (tinted)

It  is  the  annual  fair.  Francis  and  his  friend  Alan  visit  The  Cabinet  of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows off the  somnambulist  Cesare.  He  awakens  him  for  some  moments  from  his  death-like  sleep  in  order  to  predict  the  future.  When  Alan asks Cesare about his future, Cesare answers that he will die before dawn. The following morning Alan is found dead. A series of mysterious murders take place and as Francis suspects that Dr. Caligari is behind them, he starts spying on him.

The  film  is  considered  the  quintessential  work  of  German  Expressionist  cinema and a landmark in the history of cinema. Made before «horror» was a  designated  genre,  this  is  sometimes  cited  as  the  first  true  horror  film.  Producer Erich Pommer wanted to have Fritz Lang as the film’s director and although Lang was interested, he then decided to work on another film.

On  the  occasion  of  the  Centenary  of  the  film’s  world  premiere  we  are  screening the restored copy of the film with live music by Nicos Platanos and with the tinted colours used at the time.

The  film  is  a  comment  on  the  desperate  unemployment  and  financial    conditions    many    people    faced    during    the    Great    Depression — conditions created, in Chaplin’s view, by the modern industrialization. Charlie Chaplin turns against modern society, the machine age and progress. He is a factory worker frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts in a big factory. When he meets a recently orphaned barefoot girl who is fleeing the police  after  stealing  a  loaf  of  bread,  he  instantly  falls  in  love  with  her and together they seek happiness away from modern industrial society.

Modern  Times  remains  one  of  Chaplin’s  greatest  and  most  enduring  works.  Perhaps more important, because it is the Tramp’s finale, a tribute to Chaplin’s most beloved character and the silent-film era he commanded for a generation
