The film tells the story of a fictional meeting on a June night of 1791. A group of passengers in a stagecoach (among them Restif de la Bretonne, Giacomo Casanova, Thomas Paine and Sophie de la Borde) get caught up in the events of the French Revolution, when they find themselves in the city of Varennes while revolutionists arrest the fleeing King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
The film participated in the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in the 1983 Academy Awards.
