Based  on  true  events,  the  film  tells  the  story  of  one  of  the  last  Western manhunts. When the two men meet a killing in self defense takes place, triggering a massive man hunt for Willie led by Sheriff Christopher Cooper and his search posse.

After  being  blacklisted  from  Hollywood  for  21  years,  Abraham  Polonsky  made a comeback directing this film; he had not directed a film since "Force of Evil" in 1948.
