The futility and irony of war in the trenches of WWI. A unit commander in the French army must deal with a glory-seeking general who’s accusing his soldiers of cowardice after their refusal to attack an enemy position. At the same time, as their commanding officer, he has to defend his men for their mutiny.

Winston Churchill said that the film was a highly accurate depiction of trench warfare and the sometimes misguided workings of the military mind.
