Η ΑΝΑΚΡΙΣΗ / The Interrogation | Ελλάδα | 80’

Σκηνοθεσία: Serhat Karaaslan | Sales: Bac Films

It  is  the  annual  fair.  Francis  and  his  friend  Alan  visit  The  Cabinet  of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows off the  somnambulist  Cesare.  He  awakens  him  for  some  moments  from  his  death-like  sleep  in  order  to  predict  the  future.  When  Alan asks Cesare about his future, Cesare answers that he will die before dawn. The following morning Alan is found dead. A series of mysterious murders take place and as Francis suspects that Dr. Caligari is behind them, he starts spying on him.

The  film  is  considered  the  quintessential  work  of  German  Expressionist  cinema and a landmark in the history of cinema. Made before «horror» was a  designated  genre,  this  is  sometimes  cited  as  the  first  true  horror  film.  Producer Erich Pommer wanted to have Fritz Lang as the film’s director and although Lang was interested, he then decided to work on another film.

The  film  is  a  comment  on  the  desperate  unemployment  and  financial    conditions    many    people    faced    during    the    Great    Depression — conditions created, in Chaplin’s view, by the modern industrialization. Charlie Chaplin turns against modern society, the machine age and progress. He is a factory worker frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts in a big factory. When he meets a recently orphaned barefoot girl who is fleeing the police  after  stealing  a  loaf  of  bread,  he  instantly  falls  in  love  with  her and together they seek happiness away from modern industrial society.

Modern  Times  remains  one  of  Chaplin’s  greatest  and  most  enduring  works.  Perhaps more important, because it is the Tramp’s finale, a tribute to Chaplin’s most beloved character and the silent-film era he commanded for a generation

The only flaw in his plan is that he does not consider one of his co-horts’ greedy, shrewish wife and her ruthless boyfriend.

Kirk Douglas was so impressed with this film that he sought out the director for his next project "Paths Of Glory" (1957).

Another Tribute of this year's 32nd Panorama of European Cinema is dedicated to

Woodstock and the year 1969.

The Festival is held from Thursday, November 21 to Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at TRIANON Cinema (21/11-4/12, Kodrigktonos 21) and ANDORA Cinema (28/11-4/12, Sevastoupoleos 117).

About this Tribute the Festival Director Ninos Mikelidis wrote:
“In the United States at the beginning of 1969, while the Vietnam War is still at its peak, Lyndon Johnson leaves the nation's presidency and Richard Nixon is inaugurated as the new President of the United States. At Memphis Studios Elvis Presley writes his version of the song “Long Black Limousine” from the famous album "From Elvis in Memphis". The strikes at Harvard and Berkeley University begin, with National Guard helicopters dispensing airborne tear gas to the students. The beginning of the modern gay rights movement begins at New York City. The whole world watches Neil Armstrong taking the very first step onto the moon's surface. The brutality of the My Lai killings and the official cover-up fueled anti-war sentiment in the United States over the Vietnam War. Manson's followers murder Sharon Tate. Black Panthers members are gunned down by police officers as they lie sleeping in Chicago, while the Woodstock Music & Art Festival is held in August and brings together famous singers and their bands, a three days festival celebration that was captured by Michael Wadleigh's camera.
In the same year, the so called "New Hollywood" movement introduces new subject matter, putting aside the glamour and false sentimentality of its conventional narrative, influenced by the national and international events of the time.  A series of films encapsulate this mood - “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “Midnight Cowboy” considered the leading representatives- films that are infused with issues such as the Vietnam War, the fight for human and civil rights, student protests, political assassinations, the feminist movement, free love and abortion, and at the same time pose questions about the role of power, state violence and the role of the State.
The films we have chosen for this Tribute are centered on these particular themes.”

“Filmmaker and actor Elia Suleiman uses his own face and body to express the soul of Palestine in his films, and nowhere more so than in his droll new comedy, It Must Be Heaven.”
The Hollywood Reporter

“Suleiman’s comic method is sly subversive. His keenly observed episodes can seem like unrelated black comic incidents, until the whole fabric of his theme begins to appear.”
The New York Times

“Suleiman’s always a reliable charmer, with a penchant for funneling the language of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton into moving-image editorials about his troubled homeland.”
Indiewire

The next day, on Friday the 22nd of November at 12.00 p.m., Elia Suleiman will be giving a masterclass at IANOS bookstore (Stadiou 24, Athens). More information will be announced shortly.

Today we give a sneak preview of our first Tribute entitled “Film Noir in the Greek Cinema”
About this Tribute the Festival Director Ninos Mikelidis wrote:

“Thanks to crime novels and Yannis Maris’ screenplays ("The Man on the Train", "Murder Backstage", "Crime in Kolonaki" and “Doubts") and thanks to Greek filmmakers’ love and persistence for this particular genre that emerged and flourished in Hollywood during the decades of 1940 and 1950, the film noir genre made its first striking appearance in Greece in the early 1960s.
A genre that stood out due to its dark atmosphere -all films were shot in black and white film which highlighted the ideal dark atmosphere borrowing many of its elements from German Expressionism)- due to its characters’ typology -femme fatale, flawed heroes- and finally due to its plot: violent crimes, underworld, betrayal and brutal violence.
Starting with Greek filmmakers such as Dinos Katsouridis, Erricos Andreou, Dinos Dimopoulos, Sokrates Kapsaskis followed by Giorgos Karypidis, Dimitris Stavrakas, Dimitris Panayiotatos, Nikos Grammatikos, Yannis Economides and Karolos Zonaras, Greek Cinema features an extensive list of films with noir elements that did not lose their beauty, atmosphere and dynamic through time.”

See you in the big screen!

Concerning this year’s art exhibition Jannis Psychopedis stated:

‘’This year the Panorama of European Cinema celebrates its 32nd birthday. Nowadays Panorama is established as a cinematic institution that, apart from its durability over time, has every reason to proudly boast about the quality of its films displayed, its tributes as well as its artistic tendency and tradition. Furthermore Panorama is also proud of its audience: vigorous, restless and really committed to Panorama, its great audience supports and contributes significantly with its constant and overwhelming presence, to this enduring, long lasting and constantly renewed artistic effort.
In the past years along with the Panorama Screenings, an art exhibition has also been held as a parallel event related to the festival, seeking to express and find exactly where do film and visual arts really meet. […]
Stanley Kubrick was a cinematic giant in story-telling and hence a significant part of this year’s Panorama is dedicated to his work. Likewise, the art exhibition ‘’Artistic Trilogy – A discourse between Painting and Cinema’’ is also dedicated to this great director. […]’’
