The film revolves around the feud that bursts between clans of the Di Lauro Camorra syndicate. The feud is triggered by the murder
of gangsters relaxing in a tanning salon and erupts between members of the Di Lauro syndicate and the separatists, who are led by Rafaele Amato, brother of two of the men killed in the salon. The film interwines five separate stories of people whose lives are
touched by organized crime.

The film won four awards of the European Film Academy (among them best European film 2008), plus the Grand Jury Award of the Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award in the Foreign Language Film Category.

The story of two children, Voula and Alexandros, who don’t know the identity of their father and decide to search for him. During their wandering, they find help in the face of some wandering actors and a truck driver. After getting away from the police that hunts them down, they get tickets for the train to Germany, where they believe their immigrant father lives. During their journey, places always change into an empty, misty scenery.

The film won the EFA (European Film Academy Award for Best European Film of 1989) and multiple awards in festivals such as those of Berlin International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival (Silver Lion for best direction as well as the FIPRESCI Award) and SESC Film Festival in Brazil.
