The movie is based on the famous book by the Finnish author Juhani Aho, which is adapted to the big screen for the fourth time.
Kaurismäki’s remake no longer takes place in the 18th century, but in 1970, when Marja, is married to an older peasant, Juha. Her life changes radically when she meets Shemeikka, after his car breaks down near their house. His attempt to lure Marja into following him to the city and living a new, wonderful life is successful. However, her decision to abandon her husband is only the beginning of her nightmare.
The film won the C.I.C.A.E. Award-Honorary Mention in Berlin International Film Festival.
