Composer Gustav von Aschenbach, travels to Venice for health reasons. There, he becomes increasingly obsessed, with the stunning beauty of an adolescent Polish boy named Tadzio who is staying with his family at the same hotel as Aschenbach. Though he never speaks to the boy, much less touches him, the composer finds himself drawn deep into ruinous inward passion; meanwhile, Venice succumbs to a cholera plague and the hotel guests begin to realize that something is seriously wrong.
