Scottish ex-con Stevie finds work in constructions, converting a hospital into luxury condos. Like most of his coworkers, Stevie is homeless and finds a place to live by squatting in an abandoned building. The crew is exploited by its supervisors and endures unsafe conditions, while their wages are extremely low. Stevie discovers a lost handbag, and when he returns it to the owner, a spacey hopeful singer named Susan, he falls in love. He and Susan are soon living together, but their happiness won’t last for long.

The film won the European Film Academy Award for Best European Film 1991, as well as the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
