WWI, as seen through the eyes of two reluctant recruits, Giovanni and Oreste. Although completely different in character, they are united in their lack of idealism, their desire to avoid any danger and get out of the war unscathed. They, their fellow soldiers and a varied group of civilians (including the prostitute Costantina) go through many ups and downs during their training, the battles and the rare moments of leave.
