This year's 33rd edition will take place online and for free,

making the festival more accessible to a wider audience.

 

As every year the programme of the Panorama includes the

International Competition Section as well as selected thematic tributes.

The full programme of the Festival will be gradually announced in the following days.

 

Today, we give you a first taste of this year's programme presenting two tributes:

"PARADISE IN THE WEST?" - Migration as seen through the eyes of Greek Directors

and a short Tribute to Eric Rohmer's work celebrating the 100th anniversary from his birth.

PARADISE IN THE WEST? Migration as seen through the eyes of Greek Directors

 

"The Greek people are, undoubtedly, familiar with migration, as Greece, for the last two centuries, has been one of the most important emigration countries. A significant part of the Greek population left their traditional homeland for economic reasons -poverty and unemployment- and later for political reasons, seeking a better life, in a supposed paradise, a 'Promised Land' in foreign countries. A large migratory wave of Greek emigrants turned to countries such as America (Elia Kazan's film "America America" has shown us images of those transatlantic migratory flows) and to countries such as Canada, Australia, as well as the Eastern European Countries and France (fleeing especially after the Greek Civil War) and later on to Germany. A number of important Greek documentaries from the sixties bear witness to these waves of outward migration that once characterized Greece.

Although during the period of "Greek prosperity" the massive migration waves from Greece to other countries seemed to have ceased, during the recent years, a "new" Greek wave of emigration was spurred by the economic crisis and the Memorandums that followed with highly skilled young professionals that had to leave their country for financial reasons. Furthermore, during the past few years we witness the transformation of Greece into a receiving country. Immigrants from Albania, Poland, Asia and Africa, countries of the so-called "third world" that suffer from poverty, unemployment, and political persecution, now seek refuge in Greece.

The phenomenon of migration has affected the world as well as the Greek cinema. Greek filmmakers have brought stories of immigrants to life through harrowing images of fiction films and documentaries, presenting their point of view on this matter. These images, from recent migration flows, a very complex issue for which, unfortunately, Europe has been unable to provide a fair and humanitarian solution, we are now presenting in this year's programme of the 33rd Panorama of European Cinema."- Ninos-Fenek Mikelides- Director of Panorama

Eric Rohmer: The anatomist of human relationships

 

Eric Rohmer (1920-2010) has been frequently criticized for making "slow" and "uncinematic" films. But the deeper one explores his work the more he realizes that his films are in fact, exceptional comedies, studies on human relationships, human weaknesses, and lack of communication, painted with tenderness, generosity, and sharpness. His films are also graced with a delicate sense of humor, where the element of dialogue is just as crucial as the image itself.

Rohmer - a great fan of Alfred Hitchcock - wrote the first in-depth study on Alfred Hitchcock's work (with fellow director Claude Chabrol) in 1957 and remains one of the most intellectual directors of the French New Wave. He started his career as a prominent critic in 1950 when he co-founded, together with Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette, the film magazine "La Gazette du Cinéma"; a few years later -from 1957 to 1963- he became editor-in-chief of the highly influential film magazine of the Nouvelle Vague "Les Cahiers du Cinema". He turned to filmmaking, directing, in 1962, his first full-length feature "Le signe du lion".

In the 60s Rohmer directed a series of six "moral tales" ("My Night at Maud's", "The Collector", "Claire's Knee", "Love in the Afternoon" et al), while in the 70s he embarked on a second series of films, the "Comedies and Proverbs" ("The Aviator's Wife", "The Good Marriage", "Pauline at the Beach", "Full Moon in Paris", "The Green Ray", et al). He followed these in the 90s with a third series entitled "Tales of the Four Seasons": "A Tale of Springtime", "A Tale of Winter", "A Summer's Tale", closing this cycle with the exceptional "Autumn Tale". - Ninos-Fenek Mikelides - Director of Panorama
