Vasilis Vafeas was born in 1944 in Alexandria, Egypt. He studied chemistry at the Universities of Athens and film at the Sorbonne and Stavrakos school. Besides directing, signs the script and the production of films of following the development of the project at each stage of production. He began his career in the period 1973-1977 with two short-length films and three documentaries, and debuted with the masterpiece "Eastern region" in 1979.

In his films are always distinct experiential element but discontinued or gradually outweighed by the advent of the imaginary that gives a more complex dimension of reality which is a natural consequence of the fact that several of the extremely scenarios resulting from automatic writing method. Accordingly, as a designer, his fascinated by everyday human stories while at the same time attracted from tipping as it focuses on what happens to the characters of his films when collapsing cornerstones of society as a good job or an arranged marriage.

Watching the work of this tireless filmmaker convinces that comedy is nothing but a tragedy seen a long time later. That over time you discover (along with causes and purposes) the humor of a tragic situation.

For years, being on a path rotations apparently renews him, poised between film and theater (counts eleven partnerships with the National Theatre of Northern Greece and the Municipal Theatre of Veria, Kavala etc.) but without confuse roles and functions between the lens and film in the theatrical plank. Moreover transformed depending on the work they produce is expected since, as argued he himself, in an area such as the Greek cinematography forced to write the script, you get involved with casting or editing, working with much your close people ... Being a filmmaker-orchestra.

Cahit is a German Turk in his 40's. He has given up with his life after his beloved wife's death until,  one night, he -intentionally- crashes into a wall. At the hospital he's taken to, he meets Sibel, who's also tried to commit suicide because of her family's traditional issues. She asks Cahit to carry out a white marriage so that she can get rid of her family's pressure. Sibel tells him that she's interested in absolute freedom involving other people so they would live as roommates.  Cahit accepts, but while living together, they fall in love with each other.

Then they suggest that he kills a Chinese bookie to wipe off the debt. The Cosmic Dissecting Room Show is first and foremost a representational happening of avant-garde painter and visual artist Gregory Semitecolo. The painter decides to present this particular work on Samos island. The camera records, at the same time, the artistic happening as well as the reactions of locals towards complex art.

Along with " Cosmic Dissecting Room Show" there will be a screening of "Polytheama", the 16min film by Lakis Papastathis which depicts (for ERT’s "Backstage" series) the show presented in 1994 at the Athens Concert Hall by V.Vafeas, respectively based on the same work of Gr. Semitecolo.

Odysseas, a typical petty bourgeois, married and father of two, is working in the accounting department of a large company. When he's suddenly fired, at the same time his family is away on vacation, he starts wandering aimlessly around an empty, summer Athens with the compensation money in his pocket. In this wandering he meets a girl who represents his lost youth. The wandering feels like a dreamlike journey between Athens and Hydra full of surprises, funny moments, but also anxiety. A lyrical film version of Giovanni Verga's novel "La Lupa". A mature widow returns to her hometown, where she falls in love with a young farmer. Greece, early twentieth century. A bourgeois family is on the verge of breaking up. The mother has abandoned the family, and the father, a retired officer, keeps his three daughters, as well as the illegitimate son of the oldest daughter, confined in the house. After his death, the three sisters live through their personal drama. The eldest, Eleni, imbued with the morals of the time and closely identifying with her father, tries to take his place. After a serious motorcycle accident Nassos is brought into a hospital where he lies in coma without regaining his consciousness. Costi leads a peaceful life. At night he likes to read his 6-year-old son stories, to help him sleep. Their favourite is Robin Hood. Costi sees himself as the hero - saviorand defender of the oppressed. One evening, his neighbour pays him an unexpected visit and shares a secret: there's treasure buried in his grandparents' garden. If Costi will hire a metal detector to help locate it, he'll give him half of whatever they get. The two accomplices have one weekend to locate the loot. For the sake of his family and despite every obstacle Costi refuses to be discouraged.

Beyond the popcorn cinema that has flooded the cinema halls, thankfully, there still exists another cinema, originated in Europe from the Lumière brothers, Georges Méliès and Louis Feuillade and continues to this day, by contemporary European directors and with film makers from other continents, who usually are independent and, despite financial and other difficulties, continue to make films that focus on people and their personal and social problems.
From 1988, the Panorama of European Cinema supported this kind of cinema and still does today, twenty six years later, despite the financial and social turbulences that trouble our society (they surely made the Panorama’s operation difficult, but did not suspend it), and despite the indifference of institutions that supposedly support and care about culture- a large and important element of which is cinema.
Aspects of this kind of cinema - the cinema which basically belongs to its creator - cover, as always, this year's 26th Panorama program. The focus, as always, is on the competition section, which offers a selection of contemporary European films, most of which are already awarded or nominated at various festivals and were created by talented filmmakers from Italy, Serbia, Croatia, France, Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Slovenia and elsewhere. Movies with varied topics that illustrate the similarities and differences between the Northern and Southern European Films- a subject topic that will be discussed at the IANOS bookstore (Thursday, November 21 at 12:30 pm) by the Panorama in collaboration with the Greek Association of Film Critics.
This year’s grand retrospective is dedicated to the Italian gialli, with eleven thriller movies that combine terror with sex and madness (including the classic The Mask of Satan), Ricardo Freda and Pupi Avati. This year, the Greek cinema will be represented by movies selected from the 60s, including Michalis Kakogiannis’ Electra, Georgios Tzavellas’ Antigone, Takis Kanellopoulos’ Sky, Nikos Koundouros’ Young Aphrodites, Alexis Damianos’ Until the Ship Sails, Adonis Kyros’ The Block, Alekos Alexandrakis’ Dream Neighborhood, Kostas Manousakis’ The Fear, Vasilis Georgiadis’ Blood on the Land, Jules Dassin’s Phaedra, and Nikos Patatakis’ The Shepherds.
Cinema had and still has a profound relationship with the other arts, especially literature. Occasionally, many writers (from Faulkner and Marguerite Duras to Petros Markaris and Thanasis Valtinos) have written original movie scripts. This is why we requested from eight young Greek writers to choose their most beloved European movies, that perhaps enlightened their own work and influences.
This year’s special tribute will be dedicated to Alejandro Jontorofski from Chile, the last surviving surrealist film maker, with the screening of all of his films (Santa Sangre, El Topo, Holy Mountain, etc.) including his most recent work La Danza de la Realidad, which was presented at the Canes Film Festival. There will also be a tribute in contemporary independent American cinema, in which seven beloved movies will be viewed, including Larry Clark’s most recent work Marfa Girl.
Finally, as always, contemporary films will be represented in avant premiere including the invisible woman (Great Britain), which is directed by and stars Ralph Fiennes, which revolves around the secret love affair of the famous British author Charles Dickens for a much younger woman, Carlos Reygadas' (Mexico) Post Tenebras Lux (Best Director Award in Cannes Film Festival), Danis Tanovic’s (Bosnia) An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker, etc.
