Ανοιχτή συζήτηση με θέμα Ευρωπαϊκό Σινεμά - Νότος vs. Βορράς, με αφορμή την προβολή στο διαγωνιστικό τμήμα, της βραβευμένης ταινίας του Roberto Ando, "Viva la liberta!” (Βραβείο καλύτερου Σεναρίου, πρώτου αντρικού ρόλου από την Ιταλική Ένωση Κριτικών Κινηματογράφου, και υποψήφιο για Χρυσή Σφαίρα Ιταλίας και Καλύτερης ταινίας στο φεστιβάλ Karlovy Vary). Τι είναι άλλωστε ο κινηματογράφος παρά το καθρέφτισμα της κοινωνίας που αναπτύσσεται; Είτε μυθοπλαστικά είτε με όρους docudrama, στο σινεμά αποτυπώνονται οι αντιθέσεις, οι οσμώσεις, οι συγχύσεις και οι εξελίξεις, θετικές και αρνητικές, μιας κοινωνίας εν βρασμώ. Από το success story και την ανάπτυξη, ακόμη κι αν αποδειχθεί φούσκα (το πλέον αναμενόμενο), στην οικονομική υποδούλωση και τον πολιτικό αυταρχισμό, οι κινηματογραφιστές δεν διστάζουν να δείχνουν διαχρονικά την προσωπική τους θέση στο κοινό. Επομένως, ο διάλογος που ανοίγει τώρα, για το πολιτικό versus Βορρά – Νότου, είναι αναπόφευκτο να μεταπηδήσει και στο «γήπεδο» της μεγάλης οθόνης. (αυτή την ανοιχτή συζήτηση διοργανώνουν το Πανόραμα Ευρωπαϊκού Κινηματογράφου και η Πανελλήνια Ένωση Κριτικών Κινηματογράφου) Άλλωστε, κάθε χρόνο τέτοια εποχή, το Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο επιλέγει και προβάλλει τις ταινίες (αρκούντως πολιτικές) που προάγουν τις αξίες της Ένωσης (πρωτίστως κοινωνικές), τοποθετώντας στο κάδρο χώρες, λαούς και συμπεριφορές. Κι όλα αυτά μέσα από τον κινηματογραφικό φακό.
Εν προκειμένω, παρακολουθούμε στο διαγωνιστικό τμήμα του Πανοράματος Ευρωπαϊκού Κινηματογράφου την ιταλική πολιτική σάτιρα -αν και προσωπικά θα την εντάξω στο δράμα- «Ζήτω η ελευθερία», με τον αξεπέραστο ηθοποιό Τόνι Σερβίλο να υποδύεται και πάλι έναν «ακατανόητο» πολιτικό της ιταλικής σκηνής (θυμηθείτε την ερμηνεία του ως Τζούλιο Αντρεότι στο «Il divo»). Αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης αλλά παράφρων, καταθλιπτικός και εξουσιομανής, είναι τα δυο πρόσωπα του ίδιου ανθρώπου, κι όχι το αντίθετο όπως επιτάσσει το σενάριο. Οι Ιταλοί που έχουν κερδίσει το θάρρος της εικόνας, βλέποντας την ταινία τρομάζουν και πάλι, αφού τα «φαντάσματα» του Μπερλουσκόνι και του Πέπε Γκρίλο εξακολουθούν να κλωθογυρίζουν στο πολιτικό σκηνικό της χώρας τους. Αλήθεια τι παραλληλισμούς μας φέρνουν όλα αυτά στο νου, εδώ στην Ελλάδα; Και γιατί, μετ’ επιτάσεως, θα πρέπει να ανοίξει μια συζήτηση που θα μας καταδείξει το μακρύ και δύσβατο δρόμο που χωρίζει, παρά ενώνει, τη δήθεν «Δανία του Νότου» με την οσονούπω «Ελλάδα του Βορρά»; Τόσο κοινωνικά και πολιτικά, όσο και κινηματογραφικά.

Ο κινηματογράφος είχε κι εξακολουθεί να έχει ουσιαστική σχέση με τις άλλες τέχνες, ιδιαίτερα με τη λογοτεχνία. Συχνά μάλιστα, αρκετοί συγγραφείς (από τον Φόκνερ και τη Μαργκερίτ Ντιράς, μέχρι τον Πέτρο Μάρκαρη και τον Θανάση Βαλτινό) έγραψαν απευθείας σενάρια για ταινίες. Γι’ αυτό ζητήσαμε από 8 Έλληνες συγγραφείς να επιλέξουν από μια ευρωπαϊκή ταινία που αγάπησαν. Ταινίες που ίσως φωτίσουν, το δικό τους έργο, τις δικές τους επιδράσεις, και τις εκλεκτικές συγγένειες της λογοτεχνίας και της ποίησης με την κινηματογραφική τέχνη.

Η δεκαετία του ‘60 είναι η απαρχή ενός νέου, διαφορετικού ελληνικού κινηματογράφου που θα αναπτυχθεί ιδιαίτερα και θα επιβληθεί στις επόμενες δεκαετίες. Οι σπόροι είχαν μπει την προηγούμενη δεκαετία από σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης, ο Νίκος Κούνδουρος και ο Γιώργος Τζαβέλλας, είναι όμως στη δεκαετία του ‘60 που η στροφή αυτή θα αρχίσει να ωριμάζει και να μοιάζει με μια (έστω πρώιμη) άνοιξη, με ταινίες από σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Τάκης Κανελλόπουλος, ο Αλέξης Δαμιανός, ο Ροβήρος Μανθούλης, ενώ οι σκηνοθέτες της επόμενης γενιάς (Βούλγαρης, Αγγελόπουλος, Νικολαϊδης, Πανουσόπουλος, Φέρρης, κ.ά.) θα κάνουν μια πρώτη εμφάνιση με ταινίες μικρού μήκους.

Στα μέσα ιδιαίτερα της δεκαετίας, με την άνοδο της Ένωσης Κέντρου στην εξουσία και τη φιλελευθεροποίηση που ακολούθησε σχετικά με τη λογοκρισία αλλά και τη γενικότερη κοινωνική κατάσταση, οι σκηνοθέτες άρχισαν να μιλούν, με ειλικρινεία και αρκετή τόλμη, για τα καυτά κοινωνικά και άλλα προβλήματα της χώρας: απο τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, την κατοχή και την Αντίσταση (ξεκινώντας νωρίτερα με τον “Ουρανό” του Κανελλόπουλου και φτάνοντας ως “Το μπλόκο” του Άδωνι Κύρου), μέχρι τη φτώχεια (“Συνοικία το όνειρο” του Αλέκου Αλεξανδράκη), τη μετανάστευση (“Μέχρι το πλοίο” του Δαμιανού) και την τότε κοινωνικοπολιτική κρίση (“Πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο” του Ροβήρου Μανθούλη και “Οι βοσκοί (της συμφοράς)” του Νίκου Παπατάκη).

Μια ιδιαίτερη γόνιμη περίοδος που θα φυτέψει το σπόρο για τις σημαντικές πολιτικές και άλλες μεγάλες ταινίες της επόμενης δεκαετίας (“Αναπαράσταση” και “Ο θίασος” του Αγγελόπουλου, “Το προξενιό της Άννας” του Βούλγαρη, “Ευδοκία” του Δαμιανού, “Μπαλαμός” του Σταύρου Τορνέ, “Παράσταση για ένα ρόλο” του Διονύση Γρηγοράτου, και πολλές άλλες).

Υπάρχει λόγος που το ιταλικό σινεμά τρόμου χρειάζεται τον όρο giallo ως διακριτικό. Το giallo που στα Ιταλικά σημαίνει κίτρινο, προέρχεται από τα κίτρινα εξώφυλλα των δεκάδων φτηνών αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων που εμφανίστηκαν στην Ιταλία τη δεκαετία του ‘60. Όχι, ο ιταλικός τρόμος δεν έχει τόσο άμεση σχέση με τα βιβλία αυτά. Αυτό που τα συνδέει είναι πως οι ταινίες αυτές, στην εποχή που έβγαιναν, θεωρούνταν αναλόγως αναλώσιμες με τις φτηνές αστυνομικές ιστορίες που γέμιζαν από βιβλιοπωλεία μέχρι περίπτερα. Και σίγουρα εμφανίζονταν με την ίδια συχνότητα. Από τα εκατοντάδες δείγματα αυτού του ιδιόμορφου είδους που γυρίστηκαν από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ‘60 μέχρι τα τέλη του ‘70, από απλοϊκά αστυνομικά μέχρι πορνό τρόμου, είναι λίγες αυτές που θυμόμαστε μέχρι σήμερα, πολλές από αυτές όμως, αξίζει να ανακαλύψουμε.

Αδιαμφισβήτητος πατέρας του giallo δεν είναι άλλος από τον Mario Bava. O Bava ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του ως διευθυντής φωτογραφίας και αυτό αποτυπώνεται στις δουλειές του: Δυναμική κάμερα, περίπλοκα πλάνα, έντονα χρώματα, δυνατές σκιές. Πρώτο αριστούργημα του Mario Bava είναι η “Μάσκα του Σατανά” (La maschera del demonio). Κλασσικό παράδειγμα του πως μπορείς να πάρεις μία ιστορία που στα χέρια κάποιου άλλου δύσκολα θα ξεπερνούσε την μετριότητα και να την εμποτίσεις με αρχετυπικά σύμβολα, μεγαλειώδη κινηματογράφηση και έντονα συναισθήματα. Η “Μάσκα του Σατανά” επηρέασε δραστικά το σινεμά τρόμου και σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Francis Ford Coppola (Dracula) και ο Tim Burton (Ο Μύθος του Ακέφαλου Καβαλάρη) δεν δίστασαν να αποτίσουν φόρο τιμής στην συγκεκριμένη ταινία, στις δικές τους απόπειρες στο σινεμά τρόμου. Σκαλίζοντας τη φιλμογραφία του Bava δεν μπορείς να μην εντυπωσιαστείς.

Το Whip and the Body (La frusta e il corpo) με τον Christopher Lee, μία σχετικά απλή ιστορία ενός δεσποτικού και βίαιου άντρα που μετά το θάνατό του στοιχειώνει την πρώην ερωμένη του, αγγίζει στα χέρια του Ιταλού μαέστρου τα όρια του σαδομαζοχισμού. Το Lisa and the Devil (Lisa e il diavolo), με πρωταγωνιστή τον Telly Savallas, εντυπωσιάζει από το περίτεχνο mise-en-scène, την εξαιρετική χρήση του χρώματος, το κατάμαυρο χιούμορ του και την παιγνιώδη απαισιοδοξία του.
Ένας ακόμα σκηνοθέτης του giallo, και μάλιστα από του πιο παραγνωρισμένους, είναι ο Riccardo Freda. Με εμμονικούς πάντα ήρωες, θεματικές που επανέρχονται, και μια πολύ προσωπική αισθητική, ο Freda μπορεί άνετα να χαρακτηριστεί ως auteur του είδους. Προφανώς επηρεασμένες από την λογοτεχνία του Edgar Allan Poe, οι ταινίες του Freda κουβαλούν πολλές από τις εικόνες του καταραμένου συγγραφέα. Ασθενικές γυναικείες μορφές, εμμονή με την νεότητα, υποβόσκουσα σεξουαλική διαστροφή και επιβλητικά σκηνικά δεσπόζουν σε ταινίες όπως L’orribile segreto del Dr. Hichcock και Lo spettro.

Την πλέον γνωστή, και αρκετά διαφορετική, εκδοχή του giallo τη γνωρίζουμε μέσα από το σινεμά του Dario Argento. Ο Argento, με ταινίες όπως “Το πουλί με τα κρυσταλλένια φτερά”, “Η γάτα με τις εννιά ουρές” (Il gato a nove code) και “Tenebre” εισήγαγε μοτίβα που έγιναν κλασσικά, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν από πολλούς, και αγαπήθηκαν από όλους τους οπαδούς των ταινιών τρόμου. Στο σινεμά του Argento, οι δολοφόνοι φορούν πάντα μαύρα, δερμάτινα γάντια, οι γυναίκες είναι συνήθως τα θύματα, το τραυματικό παρελθόν δεν αφήνει ποτέ τους ήρωές του και τα φινάλε είναι σχεδόν πάντοτε σκοτεινά και διφορούμενα. Για τον Argento ο άνθρωπος είναι θύμα των ελαττωμάτων του και τίποτα δεν μπορεί να τον βοηθήσει να τα υπερβεί. Χαρούμενα πρόσωπα δεν υπάρχουν, παρά μόνο πρόσκαιρα, και οι ήρωές του καθορίζονται και καταδικάζονται από τις αδυναμίες τους.

Το giallo είναι ένα κινηματογραφικό παρακλάδι των ταινιών τρόμου που δυστυχώς εκφυλίστηκε γρήγορα και εξαφανίστηκε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ‘80. Έχει αφήσει όμως τη σφραγίδα του στον σύγχρονο κινηματογράφο. Σκηνοθέτες όπως ο Quentin Tarantino, και σχεδόν σύσσωμο το σύγχρονο γαλλικό σινεμά τρόμου χρωστούν πολλά στο ιταλικό pulp fiction των ‘60s και ‘70s.

Η κατάσταση αρχίζει να επιδεινώνεται ραγδαία καθώς, ενώ οι άντρες του Κόρμπι αρχίζουν να υποφέρουν τόσο ψυχικά όσο και σωματικά, η παρουσία του εχθρού στην περιοχή του, απειλεί να εκτροχιάσει εντελώς την απόδρασή τους.

Dimitris, a bankrupt telecom engineer, shuts down his business unable to cope with his excessive debts. Finally, the realistic documentation of anarchists’ everyday life in Exarchia, gives the movie the value of a rare documentary. Perhaps, the main character’s personality is not fully formed. A young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre ("Holy Blood"), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. Against his will, he "becomes her arms" and the two undertake a grisly campaign of murder and revenge.

A thief carouses the street with his armless-legless dwarf friend when he hears tell of an alchemist who turns feces into gold. He climbs the alchemist's tower to meet him and he takes the thief under his wing, showing the thief his true plan. Categorizing Alejandro Jodorowsky’s films can be as hard as assigning a dominant quality to their very own maker.

During his turbulent life, this singular artist, has been not only a film and avant-garde theatre director but also an actor, a mime, a composer, a comic writer, a fiction writer, and even the guru in a mystical school of psychology. Even if the skills of - the born in Russia by Jewish parents and grown up in Chile – Jodorowsky seem limitless, it is his quality as a director that has indelibly marked his creative hyperactivity.

The cinematic Jodorosky seeks that his every film functions as a mystical, transcendental experience for the audience. It is a mixture of wild, hallucinating surrealism with religious, almost mystical allusions, that is, in the end, riveting thanks to its iconoclastic magic.

All these, of course, provided that the viewer is determined to accept the barrage of extreme pictures as well as a content that scorns “consistently” anything conventional. The fact that Jodorowsky has repeatedly received threats for his life can be but accidental. His films are swords ready to twist mercilessly into the guts of social respectability.

The 1968 film Fando y Lis, the filmaker’s first feature film, laid the foundation for the cultivation of his notoriety as a provocative film maker, something that Jodorowsky seemed to seek from the start. The nude, the raw violence and his blasphemous pictures are depicted in a unique way in the black and white canvas; an inhospitable and dystopian world.

Even though El Topo (1970) is based on the aesthetic patterns of the spaghetti western, it develops into a delirious trip, soaked in limitless improprieties, religious and occultist symbols, surreal pictures and situations, in which allegory dominates along with the demystification of the stereotypes of organized religion. The result is a grotesque and violent film which received, over time, mythical dimensions and in which Jodorowsky undertakes to give flesh and blood to the main role (Moses, Buddha and Jesus as a hyper-spatiotemporal presence) in addition to writing, directing and funding the film.

In The Holy Mountain (1973) Jodorowsky finally has at his disposal a budget that is able to support the breadth of his inspiration. This is a film about a transcendental quest which was filmed with a cast that, before the filming, had to undergo mystical training that aimed at illumination. From the provocative use of christian symbols to the artful depiction of worlds that allude to the dominant expressions of human corruption, and from the unbearable violence of a massive massacre to the revelation of the mountain with the primordial secrets, The Holy Mountain is a surreal epic that lives up to its fame.

Santa Sagre (1989) is justifiably considered the most “commercial” and comprehensible film of the Chilean creator, yet it does not cease to comprise a provocative allegory in which horror, illusions, surrealism and the torture of a problematic sexuality, accompanied by their rich symbolic force, hold the main roles.

This year, after a 23year absence from film direction, the 84year old Jodorowsky returns with the film La danza de la Realidad, a film which he has calls autobiographical and one which, as expected, stumbles paroxysmally between a wild fantasy and a cruel reality. The film will be screened in Greece for the first time in the 26th Panorama of European Cinema as part of the world cinema premiers section .
