TAKIS KANELLOPOULOS: DEFINING HIS TIME

 

"Takis Kanellopoulos introduced us to the enchanting realm of human psyche and emotions, in the early 60's, at the height of the "golden" era of Greek cinema. When "Finos Films" filled movie theaters screening after screening with glittering commercial cinematic products. At a time when, in full contrast to the dominant mainstream/commercial tradition that prevailed among the wide audience -and among the audience of Thessaloniki Film Festival as well- where the structure of a film and its outcome was determined by the wishes of its spectators and the film director was reminiscent of an orchestra director (regarding his function), emerged a cinema in which the director himself was the whole orchestra by playing all the instruments (or most of them) by himself, conveying to us his personal view of the environment that his camera captured. This tendency coincided with the French New Wave, the British Free Cinema, the Brazilian Cinema Novo – currents that are linked to the cinema of the auteur.

The incurably romantic Kanellopoulos managed to transform all those, newly found artistic values in the most ideal (and indigenous) way, constituting together with Cacoyannis and Koundouros a tight triptych behind which all the "outsiders" and "underdogs" of the current establishment would initially join. Beginning with the all-encompassing and enthusiastic screening of the documentary "Macedonian Wedding" (September 23, 1960 at Thessaloniki Film Festival) and the internationally acclaimed anti-war masterpiece "Glory Sky" (1962), Kanellopoulos challenges the swampy certainty of his time and gives us consecutive emotional uplifts as he aligns the lines of the faces and the souls of his protagonists with the endless horizon.

With the same subversive passion, this uncompromising auteur, an anti-conformist, a hermit, who refused to fit in his time, will continue with persistence to embrace such topics as the humans' relationships, love, and life's agonies in his films "Excursion", "Parenthsesi" and "Romantic Note; films that despite the fact that they were underrated and overlooked at their time, remain today prominent examples of an innovative cinema that has lost none of its power and beauty." -Panagiotis Giannelis.
