Widowed psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to a space station (orbiting a water-dominated planet called Solaris) to investigate the mysterious death of a doctor, as well as the mental problems plaguing it's crew. While onboard he is persuaded that Solaris brings out on humans repressed memories and obsessions after an encounter with his seven-years-dead wife Khari.

This was the most widely seen of Andrei Tarkovsky's films outside of the Soviet Union although he reportedly considered it the least favorite of the films he directed.
