Two identical young women who live in different countries, Weronika in Poland and Véronique in France share a special metaphysical bond. They don’t know each other, but their lives are profoundly connected and follow as well an eerily similar course. The girls are like doubles: physically and mentally similar, both blessed with musical talent. And there are many other parallels in their lives as well; they both have the same serious health problem. The collapse of Weronica during a concert in Kraków radically affects Véronique’s life.

The film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival for Krzysztof Kieslowski, and the Best Actress Award for Irène Jacob. It was also nominated for the Golden Globe.

Séverine is married to a handsome young doctor called Pierre. Although she loves her husband dearly, she constantly fantasizes having sex with strangers in order to entertain her sexual needs and desires. When she finds out that an old acquaintance of hers, Henriette is working as a prostitute in a high-class brothel in Paris she doesn’t hesitate to visit the brothel. Although at first feels a little uncomfortable with both the thought and the actual action of having sex with men for money, soon Séverine is hired to work at her obsessive profession as a prostitute herself with the nickname «Belle de Jour» as she works only in the afternoons. Her life takes a turn when a client, Marcel, falls in love with her and decides to claim her.

In 1930 in Moscow, USSR the Soviet government puts a group of top rank economists and engineers on trial, accusing them of plotting a coup d’état. The charges are fabricated and the punishment, if convicted, is death. Sergei Loznitsa’s documentary uses unique archive footage to present one of Stalin’s first show trials as an actor-led theatrical performance in which prosecutors, witnesses, defendants and judges lie to themselves, to the audience and to the world.
