La passion de Jeanne d’Arc

Γαλλία/ France,  1928,  μ/α/ b&w
Σκην./ Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer| Σεν./ Scr: Joseph Delteil, Carl Theodor Dreyer| Φωτ./Cin: Rudolph Maté | Μοντ./ Ed: Marguerite Beaugé, Carl Theodor Dreyer | Ηθ./Cast: Maria Falconetti, Eugene Silvain, André Berley, Maurice Schutz | Παρ./ Prod: Société générale des films | Διάρκεια/Dur: 97’

Chronicling the trial of Joan of Arc in the final hours leading up to her execution, Dreyer depicts her torment in his film, a landmark of cinema and one of the best silent films ever made, not only due to its production, but mainly due to Dreyer’s expressionistic lighting and painfully intimate close-ups. The screenplay was based largely on a contemporary transcript of Joan’s trial for heresy which led to her execution. Maria Falconetti’s portrayal of Joan is considered one of the best on-screen performances in the history of cinema, and far ahead of her time.

The film will be screened accompanied by live original music by the composer Nikos Platanos.
